Julfar Archaeological Site

About this place

Julfar was a major medieval and early modern port associated with Gulf commerce and the maritime world of the famous navigator Ahmad ibn Majid. Archaeological remains around the old city document ceramics, houses and trade links that preceded the growth of modern Ras Al Khaimah. The site rewards a slow visit because low walls, tombs, soil changes and scattered structures can be easy to overlook. Use interpretation panels and nearby museums to connect the remains with agriculture, metallurgy, seafaring and trade linking southeastern Arabia with Mesopotamia, Iran and the Indus region. Stay on marked paths, never remove pottery or stone, and avoid climbing. The landscape itself is part of the evidence, showing how water, mountains, desert and coast shaped settlement over thousands of years.
