A seven-day, self-guided northbound route inspired by Portugal’s staged regional walking itineraries. Begin in Porto’s historic centre and riverfront, continue inland to Guimarães and Braga, then finish on Viana do Castelo’s Atlantic coast. Each day stays within one compact area or a clearly defined short-transfer loop, with no more than three selected places per day. Allow time for the inter-city train or local transfer between stages; use a car or pre-booked transport for hilltop sanctuaries and archaeological sites.

Day-by-day itinerary

1Day 1 — Day 1 — Porto’s historic heart

Start at Porto Cathedral, then walk through the central civic quarter to Porto City Hall and finish at Coliseu do Porto. This compact north-central city loop is best explored on foot; allow time for the cathedral interior and local cafés.

2Day 2 — Day 2 — Porto’s western parks and tram heritage

Spend the first part of the day around the green space of City Park and nearby Sea Life Porto, then return by local transit to the Tram Museum. This west-to-city sequence needs a short bus or tram transfer; it is not one continuous shoreline walk.

3Day 3 — Day 3 — Guimarães, the nation’s birthplace

Travel from Porto to Guimarães in the morning by train or car, then explore the historic core on foot. Link Guimarães Castle, the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and Largo da Oliveira, reserving time for the palace interior and a relaxed meal stop.

4Day 4 — Day 4 — Braga’s sacred and historic centre

Explore Braga’s compact old centre on foot, from the cathedral quarter to Arco da Porta Nova. Keep this day focused on the historic core; the hilltop sanctuaries are reserved for the next stage.

5Day 5 — Day 5 — Braga’s Bom Jesus and hillside sanctuaries

Make this a dedicated uphill day: reach Bom Jesus do Monte by funicular or local transport, then use a pre-arranged car or taxi to continue to Sameiro Sanctuary. Allow time to walk the terraces and check opening times before setting out.

6Day 6 — Day 6 — Viana do Castelo’s historic waterfront

Travel north from Braga to Viana do Castelo, then explore Praça da República and the nearby harbour on foot. Visit the Gil Eannes hospital ship at a relaxed pace; keep Santa Luzia hilltop and the beach for the following day.

7Day 7 — Day 7 — Santa Luzia and the Atlantic coast

Reach Santa Luzia by funicular, car or local transport and visit the sanctuary and nearby Citânia archaeological site as one hilltop cluster. Later, cross to Cabedelo Beach by local transport for a separate shoreline walk; allow extra transfer time and check access conditions.
