Bab Al Assa
Bab Al Assa
About this place
Bab El Assa is the door which connects the Kasbah castle to the popular districts of the Medina. The iconic Bab Al Assa Gate is also known as the Gate of Hell or the Gate of Punishment because of the punishments inflicted on the prisoners during their journey to the prison cell. This scene was depicted by the Orientalist painter Alfred Dehodencq in his work "The Beating". Its entrance, decorated and worked by Moroccan master craftsmen of the beginning of the 20th century in homage to Walter Harris, has been the subject of several paintings, photographs and films.
