Al Maqta Tower

Al Maqta Tower guarded the shallow crossing between Abu Dhabi Island and the mainland before bridges transformed access to the capital. Its position beside the water allowed guards to monitor travellers and defend a strategic approach. The tower remains a small but clear reminder of the geography that once made arrival on the island difficult. For tourists, the building is best read as part of a defensive and administrative network rather than as an isolated picturesque fort. Notice the towers, limited entrances, firing openings, courtyard, water access and locally available stone, coral, mudbrick or palm materials. These choices reveal how communities responded to heat, insecurity and control of routes or farmland.
