Al Jahili Fort

About this place

Al Jahili Fort was constructed in the late nineteenth century under Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa to defend Al Ain, protect palm farmers and serve as a symbol of authority. Its round tower, square enclosure and shaded courtyard are now used for exhibitions, including interpretation of explorer Wilfred Thesiger and the landscapes of the Empty Quarter. For tourists, the building is best read as part of a defensive and administrative network rather than as an isolated picturesque fort. Notice the towers, limited entrances, firing openings, courtyard, water access and locally available stone, coral, mudbrick or palm materials. These choices reveal how communities responded to heat, insecurity and control of routes or farmland. Restoration may have replaced fragile fabric, so compare repaired surfaces with older masonry, respect barriers and confirm current access before travelling.
