Trulli of Alberobello

The trulli of Alberobello are traditional limestone dwellings constructed without mortar and crowned by corbelled conical, domed or pyramidal roofs. More than 1,500 survive in the town's main historic districts, creating an unusually coherent urban landscape. The technique has deep roots in Mediterranean dry-stone building and uses material gathered from the surrounding land. Look closely at the thick whitewashed walls, roof slabs, pinnacles and painted symbols. The site is valuable as living vernacular architecture: many buildings remain in use, linking preservation with the daily life of the community.
