Alcobaça Monastery

About this place

Established in 1153 by Afonso Henriques, this monastery became one of Portugal's most influential religious institutions. Its early Gothic architecture reflects the importance of monastic life in the medieval kingdom. The scale of the complex gives a sense of the community's former wealth and reach. The community's influence extended into activities such as farming and trade, connecting the monastery with the surrounding economy. It closed during the dissolution of Portugal's monasteries in 1834. Those wider activities and its eventual closure help visitors imagine an institution that once supported a complex working community around the church.
