About this place
The Al Kamra Tower or Tribute Tower is the main component of the Portuguese fortress of Assilah. It is located inside the fortress, next to Bab El Bhar, the sea gate that gives access to the fishing port. Built between 1505 and 1509 during the reign of Manuel I of Portugal, it occupies a privileged location in the urban plan of the city within the walls. This military and gothic tower served as a residence for the daughter of the King of Portugal who had it built. This daughter married the Governor of Assilah, with the aim of bringing her a little closer to her beloved country.
