Palau de la Música Catalana
About this place
Built from 1905 to 1908 for the Orfeó Català choral society, this concert hall celebrates Barcelona's musical and cultural revival. Architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner made it a landmark of Catalan Modernisme. Look closely at its richly decorated surfaces and integration of different crafts. The choral society was closely associated with the revival of Catalan culture, giving the building a meaning beyond musical performance. Support from the city's industrial and commercial community helped realise the project. Its exuberant architecture can be read as a public declaration of civic pride and cultural identity.
