Batalha Monastery

About this place

Founded to commemorate the Portuguese victory at Aljubarrota in 1385, this monastery became a burial place of the Aviz dynasty. Its elaborate Gothic and Manueline forms turn a military event into a lasting religious monument. Notice the fine stonework and the relationship between devotion and royal memory. The monastery's official dedication to Saint Mary of the Victory makes its foundation story explicit. It was also a place where the royal dynasty could present itself to later generations through burial and patronage. Reading the church as both a religious house and a family memorial reveals why so much effort went into its architectural expression.
