Landmark

Co-Cathedral of Santa María

About this place

This church is an important landmark within the historic centre of Cáceres. Its stone exterior and religious artworks reflect the patronage that shaped the old town. Look at the building alongside the surrounding palaces to understand the close relationship between civic, noble and religious life. The present church was erected in the 15th century, and its principal altarpiece was carved in the 16th century by Roque Balduque and Diego Guillen Ferrant. Those dates connect the building with the transition from medieval to early modern Cáceres. The altarpiece gives a more intimate counterpoint to the strong stone exterior.
