Cape Spartel is the northwesternmost point of the African continent, the dramatic promontory where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar — one of the most strategically significant maritime passages in world history. Known to the ancients as Cape Ampelusia, this rugged headland has guided sailors since Phoenician times, and its waters have claimed countless ships navigating the treacherous currents where two great bodies of water collide. The Cape Spartel Lighthouse, Morocco's oldest, was constructed between 1861 and 1864 under Sultan Muhammad IV of the Alaouite dynasty, designed by French engineer Léonce Reynaud. Its construction was prompted by a series of devastating shipwrecks, including the 1860 wreck of a Brazilian warship. What makes the lighthouse historically unique is that it was financed and managed through international cooperation — in 1865, Morocco signed agreements with the United States, Britain, France, and eight other nations establishing the lighthouse's neutral status under international co-management, reflecting the global strategic importance of this narrow waterway. The tower rises 24 meters in a distinctive blend of Moorish and European architectural styles, with ochre walls decorated with red bricks and a battlemented gallery. Its first-order Fresnel lens has a range of 30 nautical miles and continues to guide transatlantic shipping. The lighthouse is featured on Morocco's 200-dirham banknote and was renovated and opened to the public with an attached maritime museum in 2021. Cape Spartel also witnessed the Battle of Cape Spartel in September 1936, one of the first naval confrontations of the Spanish Civil War.,
