The Caves of Hercules are one of Morocco's most captivating natural and mythological landmarks, a sea-carved cavern on the Atlantic coast just 14 kilometers west of Tangier where legend and geology intertwine. Archaeological evidence indicates that the caves were inhabited by Neolithic peoples as far back as 6000 BCE, making them one of the oldest known sites of human presence in Morocco. In antiquity, the Phoenicians — master navigators who established Tingis as a trading post — likely used the caves as a landmark and possibly left carved circular patterns in the stone, though whether these were ritual markings, trade symbols, or remnants of millstone extraction remains debated. According to Greek and Roman mythology, the mighty hero Hercules rested in these caves after separating Europe from Africa with a single blow, creating the Strait of Gibraltar — the "Pillars of Hercules" — and before undertaking his eleventh labor to steal the golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides. The cave's most famous feature is its sea-facing opening, eroded by wind and waves into a shape uncannily resembling the continent of Africa, which at sunset becomes one of Morocco's most photographed natural wonders. Local Berber populations later quarried the cave's stone to make millstones for olive presses, leaving circular indentations still visible in the walls. The caves were officially opened to the public in 1920, declared a National Heritage site in 1952, and underwent major renovations commissioned by King Mohammed VI in 2015. The ashes of the renowned artist and writer Brion Gysin were scattered here in 1986, and in 1995 the British rock group Def Leppard played a concert in the cave as part of a Guinness World Record attempt for performing on three continents in one day.
