Santa Cruz Monastery
About this place
Founded in 1131, Santa Cruz became closely connected with the formation of the Portuguese kingdom. The first king, Afonso Henriques, chose it as his burial place. The church offers a direct link between medieval religious institutions, royal government and the creation of national memory. The monastery's school, library and production of manuscripts made it a centre of learning as well as worship. Royal support helped it accumulate influence and resources. Remembering these activities brings the institution to life as a working community that contributed to administration and intellectual exchange, rather than only a place of burial.
