Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

About this place

This medieval fortress-palace became an important royal residence in Christian Córdoba. Its towers, courtyards and gardens reveal how defence and courtly life occupied the same space. The site also carries the memory of later institutional uses, adding further layers to its history. Alfonso XI ordered the construction of the fortress in 1328 on a site with earlier Roman and Islamic associations. Its restrained outer walls contrast with the more intimate courtyards and gardens. This difference helps visitors understand why the word alcázar can refer to a palace as well as a fortified stronghold.
