About this place

West of Córdoba, the remains of this 10th-century palace city recall the power of the Umayyad caliphate. Built for Abd al-Rahman III, it was a centre of government and court life. Read the terraces and surviving architectural fragments as clues to a once-elaborate royal capital. The palace city was abandoned after destruction during civil conflict in the early 11th century. Its short life contrasts with the ambitions behind its construction. Walking through the remains helps reveal both the organisation of a powerful court and how quickly a political centre could lose its purpose when authority fractured.
