Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba

Begun as a great mosque under the Umayyads in the 8th century, this building was expanded before becoming a cathedral in 1236. Its repeated arches and later Christian spaces preserve layers of Córdoba's history. Notice how different periods share the same monumental interior. One of the most striking changes came in the 16th century, when a Renaissance nave and crossing were inserted into the earlier mosque. The former minaret was also remodelled as a bell tower. These alterations allow visitors to observe the building's religious transformation directly in its structure, rather than only in a written timeline.
