Al Koot Fort

About this place

Al Koot Fort, also called Doha Fort, occupies a strategic point beside Souq Waqif. An Ottoman police post was established here in 1880; the complex later served as a jail and was rebuilt in 1927 under Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. Its square enclosure combines three round towers with a rectangular tower, battlements and a monitored courtyard mosque, recalling the policing and protection of Doha's growing market. This landmark helps visitors read Doha's transformation while retaining links with earlier civic life. Study the original function, later adaptations and relationship with surrounding streets, waterfront and public institutions. Details such as shaded arcades, courtyards, towers, doors and reused rooms often reveal more than the facade alone. Access may depend on events or operating hours, but the exterior and neighbourhood still provide useful historical context on a walking route.
