The National Museum of Qatar presents the peninsula's natural history, archaeology, social traditions and modern statehood in galleries wrapped around the restored palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani. Jean Nouvel's interlocking discs evoke the desert rose, creating a contemporary landmark that deliberately frames an older seat of government. Highlights include material from Al Zubarah, pearl-diving history, jewellery and the celebrated Pearl Carpet of Baroda. A tourist can use the displays to connect individual objects with the larger changes that reshaped Qatar: pearling and maritime trade, family and domestic life, the arrival of oil, state formation and rapid urban growth.
