Fort of Ponta da Bandeira
About this place
This coastal fort guarded the entrance to Lagos's harbour where the river meets the Atlantic. Its position reveals the importance of protecting maritime traffic and the town from attack. Examine the compact defensive layout and gun positions with the harbour approach in view. Built in the 17th century, the fort belonged to a wider system of maritime defences around Lagos. Later restoration helped preserve its compact form. Placing it in that network makes the visit more meaningful: this small structure was one part of a larger effort to protect a port and the movement of people and goods through it.
