Carmo Convent

The ruined Gothic church of this medieval convent is one of Lisbon's clearest reminders of the devastating 1755 earthquake. Its open structure makes the scale of that destruction tangible. Stand beneath the surviving arches to imagine the vaulted interior that once enclosed this space. The ruins preserve a break in the city's architectural history that later rebuilding elsewhere can make difficult to imagine. The missing roof is therefore part of the historical experience, not simply an unfinished restoration. Looking through the arches toward the sky makes the earthquake's consequences unusually immediate and memorable.
