Ancient Theatre of Fourvière
About this place
This Roman theatre occupies the hill of Fourvière within the ancient city of Lyon. Its surviving layout provides a direct way to imagine organised public entertainment in a provincial centre of the Roman world. Follow the curve of the seating toward the performance space to understand how the architecture concentrated attention and managed a large audience. The hillside setting was part of the design, not simply a backdrop. Seen alongside the later city below, the theatre also reveals how the centre of urban life can shift while older monuments remain embedded in the landscape.
