Puerta de Alcalá

About this place

Inaugurated in 1778, this monumental gateway was commissioned by Charles III and designed by Francesco Sabatini. Its classical arches and carved decoration reflect the king's efforts to reshape Madrid. Imagine arriving here when gateways still marked the edge of the city. The gateway takes its name from the road toward Alcalá de Henares. Its granite architecture and pale sculptural details were intended to make that approach more impressive. The central inscription names Charles III and the year 1778, offering a direct historical clue that visitors can identify on the monument itself.
