The Marrakech Museum is housed in the Dar Menebhi Palace, a stunning late-19th-century residence built by Mehdi Menebhi, a wealthy and influential minister who served under Sultan Moulay Abdelaziz. The palace exemplifies the architectural elegance of the Alawite period, combining elements of traditional Moroccan design — central courtyards, riad gardens, zellige tilework, and carved cedar ceilings — with the refined decorative tastes of Morocco's late imperial era. After Mehdi Menebhi's death, the palace passed through various phases of use, including serving as a girls' school during the French Protectorate period, before falling into disrepair. In the late 1990s, the Omar Benjelloun Foundation undertook a meticulous restoration of the building, transforming it into a museum dedicated to Morocco's rich cultural and artistic heritage. The museum's collection spans modern and traditional Moroccan art, including contemporary paintings, historical manuscripts, coins, pottery, and artifacts that reflect the diverse cultural influences — Arab, Berber, and Jewish — that have shaped Moroccan civilization. The palace's Andalusian-style courtyard, with its central fountain and ornate reception rooms, provides an architectural setting that is itself a major attraction, offering visitors an immersive experience of Moroccan artistic traditions within a historically significant medina residence.
