Bellver Castle
About this place
Built in the 14th century for James II of Mallorca, Bellver is distinguished by its circular plan. It later served as a prison, giving the royal residence a very different role. Walk around the courtyard to appreciate the unusual geometry of this Gothic castle. The castle's later use as a military prison continued into the 20th century, a very different chapter from its beginnings as a royal home. That history changes the way its enclosed spaces can be read. The same walls that once protected a court could later restrict movement, showing how architecture acquires new meanings through use.
