Palma Cathedral

Construction began after the Christian conquest of Mallorca in 1229 on a site previously occupied by a mosque. The Gothic cathedral grew over several centuries. Notice its immense nave and great rose window, which make light a central part of the architectural experience. The building stands close to the royal palace and the historic city walls, placing it within a wider setting of authority and defence. Its position near the water makes its height especially striking. The cathedral therefore shaped both the religious experience inside and the appearance of Palma to those arriving from the sea.
