Peñafiel Castle
About this place
This long, narrow castle crowns the ridge above Peñafiel and is often compared to a stone ship. Its powerful walls express the strategic importance of the site in medieval Castile. View its outline from below to understand how the builders adapted the fortress to the hill. The fortress measures more than 200 metres along its ridge, but is much narrower across. A tall central keep reinforces its distinctive outline. Its development involved several generations of nobles, so the building also illustrates how strategic places could accumulate investment as control passed between powerful families.
