Landmark
Clérigos Church and Tower
About this place
This Baroque church is crowned by a tall bell tower that became one of Porto's defining landmarks. The ensemble shows how religious architecture shaped the city's skyline. Look upward from the surrounding streets to appreciate the tower's intended visibility and its relationship with the church below. The tower rises about 75 metres, giving it an unusually strong presence above the surrounding buildings. That height is part of the historical design rather than simply a benefit for modern sightseeing. From nearby streets, notice how the changing angle of view makes the monument appear and disappear within the densely built city.
