Monolithic Church of Saint-Émilion

About this place

Carved into the limestone beneath Saint-Émilion, this underground church developed during the 11th and 12th centuries and is among Europe's largest monuments of its kind. Its nave and side aisles were formed by removing thousands of cubic metres of rock, so much of the building's scale is hidden from the square above. A tall bell tower later marked the sacred space within the town's skyline. During a visit, notice how the rock itself creates pillars, walls and vaults. The monument links medieval religious life with the quarrying history of the limestone plateau.
