Royal Alcázar of Seville

About this place

This palace grew from an Islamic citadel into a royal residence shaped by successive rulers. Peter I's 14th-century palace is a celebrated example of Mudéjar architecture, made for a Christian court using Islamic artistic traditions. Notice the intricate decoration and sequence of intimate courtyards. The complex developed under Umayyad, Abbadid and Almohad rulers before the Castilian conquest of 1248. Subsequent Gothic and Renaissance work added further layers. Rather than representing one moment in time, the Alcázar shows how a prestigious location could be repeatedly adapted while remaining a centre of authority.
