The Tangier American Legation is a building of extraordinary diplomatic and historical significance — the first American public property acquired abroad and the only U.S. National Historic Landmark located in a foreign country. The story begins in 1777 when Sultan Mohammed III of Morocco became the first head of state in the world to recognize the newly independent United States of America, establishing a treaty of friendship and peace that remains the longest unbroken treaty in U.S. history. In 1821, Sultan Moulay Suliman gifted this building in the heart of the Tangier medina to the United States, making it the first American diplomatic property overseas. For nearly 140 years, the building served as the U.S. legation and consulate in Morocco, witnessing the transformation of Tangier from an imperial city to an International Zone and finally to a city in independent Morocco. The architecture of the legation is a fascinating blend of Moroccan and American styles, featuring a traditional riad layout with a central courtyard, carved stucco, zellige tilework, and cedar wood ceilings. During World War II, the legation played a crucial role in intelligence operations and diplomatic communications. After the U.S. diplomatic mission moved to Rabat in 1961, the building was threatened with demolition but was saved through the efforts of cultural preservationists. In 1975, it was established as the Tangier American Legation Institute for Moroccan Studies (TALIMS), and today it functions as a museum and cultural center dedicated to Moroccan-American relations, housing an extensive collection of art, historical documents, and memorabilia that tell the story of one of the world's oldest diplomatic friendships.
