Hammam Balad

About this place

Hammam Balad or Hammam Sidi Mandri, is the first hammam of the city of Tetouan. It is considered one of the oldest hammams in Morocco, dating back more than 500 years, still operational. It is a bath for men, also called the small bath because of its size compared to other Hammams. It is located in an alley known as the street of Hammam de Sidi Al-Mandhari. More precisely, it is located between Wasaa Square and the Morstan, where the oven is located that also serves to heat the Hammam. It is one of the unique facilities dating from the late fifteenth century and distinguished by the fact that it consists of two floors, the lower floor dedicated to bathing and the upper floor that serves as a relaxation area. The Hammam has undergone a series of renovations, the last of which dates from the late 90s of the last century. Several aesthetic elements have been altered, although it retains much of its architectural and artistic components. It is connected to the water system, through the main pipe and the goldsmith's tank. The creation of this bathroom, like the rest of the bathrooms, was linked to the urban developments that the city experienced and the demographic development due to the successive Andalusian migrations to the city. And it is the first bathroom to be used by about 1,000 people. Without forgetting a number of private Hammams in some houses as the personal Hammam of the renovator of this city.
