Mellah Canal

About this place

This is the most recent canal in the new Hebrew quarter of the Mellah. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, it was built in 1907 on the corner between Haifa Street and Nablus Street. It has a rectangular shape with a horseshoe arch inlaid with Tetouan tiles, at the top of which is written a sentence in Hebrew designating the person who volunteered to build it. It is Mr. Masoud Arouah. The date of its construction in the Hebrew calendar dates back to 5668. It was built as an ongoing charity for the Jewish community of Tetouan. 53- Dar Sidi El Mandri XV This is the first house built in the picturesque city of Tetouan. Its construction was linked to the mosque of the Kasbah in the fifteenth century. This house has a special symbolic meaning because it was the house of the emirate, the residence of the ruler, founder and renovator of the city of Tetouan in the 15th century. This house was closely linked to the old mosque by a door on which Abu Hassan Ali El Mandri used to pray. This house, like many houses in Tetouan, underwent changes that affected the artistic and decorative aspects until the early 20th century.
