This gate is the oldest gate of the old medina of Tetouan and one of the three gates mentioned by the author of "Mirrat Al-Mahasin" which dates back to the 16th century. Its name comes from the fact that it is linked to the Islamic cemeteries in addition to the Jewish cemetery. The gate is known by several names, including the gate of Sidi El Mandri referring to the tomb of the renovator of the city, and by Bab Al-Rabad Al Aala as mentioned by the author of "Doha Al- Nasher". Its most famous name so far is the gate of the cemetery because it is the main gate through which the inhabitants of Tetouan go out to perform their funerals and burials. This gate was also known during the first Spanish occupation in 1860 as Bab Nasr, La puerta de Victoria, as it was called during the second occupation in 1913 because people used to go from this gate to the occupied city of Ceuta.
