The Gate of Rmouz

About this place

This is the smallest of the city gates, and its construction is linked to the emergence of the lower Al Rabad quarter in the first half of the sixteenth century. This gate is located at the end of the old Houmt al-Msalla and was named after a famous family living in Tetouan and owning land between this gate and the Oued Martin. During the Spanish occupation between 1860-1862, the name of this gate became La Puerta de Reyes Catholicos. It was later called Bab al-Bahr, as well as Bab Luneta, meaning the Little Moon, which is the name by which the old neighborhood of Msalla was known during the period of the Spanish protectorate.
