Toledo Cathedral
About this place
This great medieval cathedral stands at the centre of Toledo's religious and artistic history. Its Gothic architecture is enriched by later chapels and decoration. Move slowly through the building to see how successive generations expressed their wealth and devotion through stonework, sculpture and painting. Construction began in 1226, with major Gothic work continuing into the late 15th century. The design drew on French cathedral architecture while also incorporating local traditions. Its many aisles and chapels reward a slow visit, allowing the building to be understood as a sequence of spaces rather than a single grand hall.
