About this place

The Barzan Towers rise above Umm Salal Mohammed and were renovated in the early twentieth century under Sheikh Mohammed bin Jassim Al Thani. Built of coral rock and limestone with thick plastered walls, the unusually tall multi-level watchtowers may have monitored approaching ships, protected water supplies and supported observations of the moon used for the lunar calendar. Their name means a high place, matching the elevated outlook. For visitors, the surviving walls, ground plan and setting are as important as any restored feature. Look for construction adapted to heat, scarce water and coastal trade, and compare the site with Qatar's modern skyline and infrastructure. Walk carefully, avoid climbing fragile masonry, and treat unexcavated ground as part of the archaeological record. The place is best understood as evidence of everyday life, defence and exchange on the peninsula rather than as an isolated monument.
