This great Baroque church beside the Ebro developed mainly from the late 17th century onward. It is associated with the religious tradition of the Virgin appearing to Saint James. View the domes from across the river to appreciate the basilica's place in Zaragoza's skyline. The present structure developed mainly between 1681 and 1872, considerably later than the origins claimed in its religious traditions. Separating those two timelines helps explain the monument clearly. Its physical architecture reflects centuries of patronage, while the devotional story connects it with the beginnings of Christianity in Spain.
